Gabriel Educational Consulting

Specializing in Student Academic Support and Academic Advising and Retention Strategy

As an educational consultant, I draw on my extensive knowledge of the college student experience, which includes over two decades of helping students find academic and personal success–as a professor and academic advisor, department chair of History and program coordinator of European Studies, Associate Dean of Academic Advising, co-chair of the Retention Committee and co-founder of St. Lawrence University's First-Gen Initiative, and in my work across the university. I have worked closely with faculty colleagues in all departments, as well as with the Registrar's Office, Student Life, Health & Counseling, Athletics, Information Technology, Financial Aid, the Board of Trustees, and many others. I bring a holistic understanding of the student experience and the structure and operations of the university.

My Services

Students and Families

I work with students and their families on navigating the college experience–understanding university policies and procedures (such as academic probation and suspension, academic honesty, grade conflicts, student judicial concerns) and fully utilizing the many supports and opportunities available to students (tutoring, writing and quantitative skills centers, student accessibility services, counseling and wellness services, off-campus study, career services, and much more). I help students make the most of their time at college and deal with the bumps along the road, which can often feel confusing and occasionally even frightening.

My goal is to help students make sense of the many aspects of the university that might be unfamiliar to them, based on my extensive experience of helping students with all manner of issues. Unsure how to fill out an academic petition? I can help. Receive an academic probation letter you are trying to make sense of? I can help. Want to know how to prepare yourself to submit a successful application to study off-campus for a semester? I can help. Wondering if you should take a semester leave of absence and how that would work? I can help. Trying to figure out if you are on track to graduate? I can help. Struggling with connecting at college, feeling isolated, or worried about managing your mental health and academic expectations? I can help. In my many years working with students, I understand that whether you are a first-generation college student or a student with a long family history at your university, there will be issues that come up that leave you wondering what to do and where to turn. In addition to offering advice and guidance based on my decades of experience, I can help you utilize the valuable resources that exist at your school to help you succeed.

Usually, I can help you work through your current issue in only a couple of hours, but you are welcome to seek my support as often as you need.

Colleges and Universities

I work with colleges on developing their academic advising and retention efforts, including using institutional data effectively to develop plans and building buy-in from stakeholders across campus.

I have been a professor at St. Lawrence University for over twenty years, and from 2017-2023 I served as Associate Dean of Academic Advising and co-chaired our Retention Committee. I also chaired the History department, coordinated the European Studies program, and have served on the elected Faculty Council (including chairing) and was elected Faculty Delegate to the Board of Trustees. During my tenure as Associate Dean, my colleagues and I revised our academic standing process and communications and undertook many retention- and belonging-related initiatives. I co-founded our First-Gen Initiative and our chapter of Tri-Alpha (the national first-generation college student honorary society) and was one of the key leaders of our campus adoption of the Starfish student success platform. I bring to my work many years of experience supporting students, working with faculty colleagues, communicating with families, and partnering with staff in every area of campus life. I have training in personnel management, mediation, intergroup dialogue, and intercultural awareness.
